PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), increasingly referred to by many advocates as Pervasive Drive for Autonomy, is a profile characterised by an extreme anxiety-driven need to resist everyday demands and expectations. 
It often is diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum, however research is evolving and we are seeing that "PDA" can exist without Autism.

Individuals with PDA are not being deliberately oppositional or defiant. Their nervous system experiences demands as threats to autonomy, triggering a fight, flight, freeze, fawn or flop response.

Is PDA a recognised diagnosis?

PDA is not currently recognised as a separate diagnosis in major diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5 or ICD-11.

However, PDA is widely recognised as a distinct autism profile by many clinicians, researchers, educators, and autism organisations, particularly in the UK.

Research into PDA began with psychologist Elizabeth Newson, whose work identified a group of children whose presentation differed from other autistic profiles.

Is PDA "Real"?

Yes.

Although debate continues around terminology and classification, the experiences of PDA individuals and families are well documented.

Many autistic individuals identify strongly witih the PDA profile because it accurately describes their experience of;

Extreme demand avoidance
High anxiety
Need for autonomy
Social masking
Emotional dysregulation

The ongoing debate is generally about classification, not whether the experiences exist.

Is PDA just bad behaviour?

Accepted Answer

No, absolutely not.

PDA behaviours are usually driven by anxiety and threat responses rather than deliberate defiance.

What may look like:
Refusing
Ignoring
Arguing
Negotiating
Running away
Aggression
is often a sign that the individual's nervous system is overwhelmed.

The key question becomes:
"What is the behaviour communicating?"
rather than
"How do I make them comply?"

Why does my child refuse things they actually want to do?

This is one of the most confusing aspects of PDA.

Even activities that are enjoyable can become demands.

Examples:
Refusing a trip they were excited about
Not eating a favourite food
Avoiding a hobby they love
Rejecting a gift they asked for.

The issue is often not the activitty itself but the feeling of expectation attached to it.

Why do rewards and consequences often make things worse?

Traditional behaviour systems assume people are motivated by rewards and deterred by consequences.

For many PDA individuals:
Rewards can feel like pressure
Praise can feel like expectation
Consequences can increase anxiety
Sticker charts can become demands

When anxiety rises, demand avoidance often increases.

Can PDA children behave differently at school and home?

Accepted Answer

Yes.

Many PDA children use enormous amounts of energy masking and coping in school environments.

Parents often hear:

"They're fine at school."

Whilst experiencing:
Meltdowns after school
Aggression at home
Emotional exhaustion
Burnout

Home is often the safest place to release accumulated stress.

What is masking?

Masking is the process of hiding neurodiverse traits to fit in socially.

Many PDA children:
Appear sociable
Use eye contact
Seem confident
Follow rules in some environments

while internally experiencing significant anxiety and overwhelm.

Masking can be exhausting and may contribute to burnout.

What is the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum?

But briefly:

A meltdown is an involuntary nervous system response to overwhelm. The child is not choosing the behaviour and often stop it.

A tantrum is generally goal-directed behaviour intended to achieve a specific outcome.

For PDA children, what appears to be a tantrum may actually be a meltdown triggered by anxiety and loss of autonomy.

Should I stop setting boundaries?

Accepted Answer

No.

PDA-informed parenting is not permissive parenting.

Children still need:
Safety boundaries
Respectful relationships
Predictability
Guidance

The difference is often in how boundaries are communicated.

Instead of:
"You must do this now."

Try:
"How can we make this work together?"
